GURUPADUKA STOTRAM (BY ACHARYA SANKARA)

           गुरुपादुकास्तोत्रम्
   
 (श्रीमच्छंकरभगवत्पादविरचितम्)


अनंतसंसारसमुद्रतार-
  
नौकायिताभ्यां गुरुभक्तिदाभ्यां।
वैराग्यसाम्राज्यदपूजनाभ्यां
 
 नमोनमः
श्रीगुरुपादुकाभ्यां॥१॥

Pranams to the pair of padukas of the Guru which, as a ship, help one cross the endless ocean of samsara, which bestows devotion to the Guru and the worship of which makes one the Emperor of Vairagya Samrajya (the empire of detachment)

कवित्ववाराशिनिशाकराभ्यां
 
 दौर्भाग्यदावांबुदमालिकाभ्यां।
दूरीकृतानम्रविपत्तिताभ्यां
 
 नमोनमः
श्रीगुरुपादुकाभ्यां॥२॥

Pranams to the pair of padukas of the Guru which are like to moon to the ocean of kavitwa (the capacity to create beautiful poems, also spiritual knowledge) and which are like rain-giving clouds for the wild fire of misfortunes.

नता ययोः
श्रीपतितां समीयुः

   
 कदाचिदप्याशु
दरिद्रवर्याः।
मूकाश्च वाचस्पतितां
हि ताभ्यां
    
नमो नमः श्रीगुरुपादुकाभ्यां॥३॥
Pranams to the pair of padukas of the Guru which instantly make even utterly poor persons possessors of great wealth if they bow their heads to those padukas even once and which make even dumb humans eloquent speakers.  
नालीकनीकाशपदाहृताभ्यां
 
 नानाविमोहादिनिवारिकाभ्यां।
नमज्जनाभीष्टततिप्रदाभ्यां
 
 नमो नमः
श्रीगुरुपादुकाभ्यां॥४॥

Pranams to the pair of padukas of the Guru which attract (devotees) by their beauty as the lotus, which remove the different types delusions (of devotees) and which fulfil all the wishes of those who bow to them.

नृपालिमौलिब्रजरत्नकांति-
  
सरिद्विराज्झषकन्यकाभ्यां।
नृपत्वदाभ्यां नतलोकपंक्ते:
   
नमोनमः श्रीगुरुपादुकाभ्यां॥५॥

Pranams to the pair of padukas of the Guru which resemble a pair of fish in the river of light emitted from the brilliance of the diamonds and jewels set in the crowns of kings who bow to them and which make all those who bow to them kings.

पापान्धकारार्कपरंपराभ्यां
   
तापत्रयाहीन्द्र खगेश्वराभ्यां।
जाड्याब्धिसंशोषणवाडवाभ्यां
  
 नमोनमः
श्रीगुरुपादुकाभ्यां॥६॥

Pranams to the pair of padukas of the Guru which are like a series of suns dispelling the darkness of sins, which are like Garuda for the king of serpents which are the three kinds of distress ( आध्यात्मिका, आधिभौतिका एवं आधिदैविकाः तापाः), and which dry up the ocean of ignorance like the fire at the time of dissolution (वडवाग्नि)

शमादिषट्कप्रदवैभवाभ्यां
   
समाधिदानव्रतदीक्षिताभ्यां।
रमाधवांघ्रिस्थिरभक्तिदाभ्यां
   
नमोनमः श्रीगुरुपादुकाभ्यां॥७॥

Pranams to the pair of padukas of the Guru which bestow the six qualities (needed for an aspirant on the spiritual path) like शम, दम etc, which have vowed to bestow samadhi (on devotees) and which also bless the devotees with firm devotion at the lotus feet of Lord Vishnu.

स्वार्चापराणामखिलेष्टदाभ्यां
  
स्वाहासहायाक्षधुरंधराभ्यां।
स्वान्ताच्छभावप्रदपूजनाभ्यां
  
नमोनमः श्रीगुरुपादुकाभ्यां॥८॥

Pranams to the pair of padukas of the Guru which fulfill the desires of those who worship, which take on all their burdens and the worship of which purifies the heart and mind of the devotees.

कामादिसर्पव्रजगारुडाभ्यां
 
 विवेकवैराग्यनिधिप्रदाभ्यां।
बोधप्रदाभ्यां
दृढमोक्षदाभ्यां
  
 नमोनमः
श्रीगुरुपादुकाभ्यां॥९॥

Pranams to the pair of padukas of the Guru which are like Garuda for the serpents of passion, anger etc. (कामक्रोधलोभमोहमदमात्सर्यादयः), which bestow discrimination and detachment on the devotees and finally Knowledge and liberation from the cycle of births and deaths.
