ASHTA DIKPALA STOTRAM

अष्टदिक्पालकस्तोत्रम्
            (Hymn to the presiding deities of
the 8 quarters)
इन्द्रः (Indra)- presiding deity of East- bestows wealth and
happiness.
           श्लोकः
           ऐरावतगजारूढं स्वर्णवर्णं किरीटिनम्।
           सहस्रनयनं शक्रं वज्रपाणिं विभावयेत्
Indra is to be meditated
upon as seated on the Eiravata elephant, having a golden complexion, wearing a
crown, having one thousand eyes and carrying the Vajrayudha.            
अग्निः(Agni,
Fire) –presiding deity of South East – bestows a lustrous body and good
fortune.
              श्लोकः
              सप्तार्चिषं
च बिभ्राणं अक्षमालां कमण्डलुम्।
              ज्वालमालाकुलं
रक्तं शक्तिहस्तं चकासतम्॥
Meditate on Agni who
shines with seven types of sparks, wears an akshamala (necklace of
beads),  has a kamandalu (water
jug), is surrounded by flames, bears a red complexion and carries a sakti
(spear).      
यमः
(Yama, God of death) presiding deity of South- embodiment of Dharma. Bestows
good results for righteous actions
         श्लोकः 
         कृतान्तं महिषारूढं
दण्डहस्तं भयानकम्।
         कालपाशधरं कृष्णं ध्यायेत्
दक्षिणदिक्पतिम्॥
        
Meditate upon Yama, the
Lord of the South quarter, who puts an end (to the lives of beings), rides a
buffalo, has a staff (danda) in his hands, has a terrifying form and carries
the rope of Time (kaalapaasa).
निर्‍ऋति –   Presiding
deity of South west.  Meditated upon, he
bestows freedom from enemies.
             श्लोकः
             रक्तनेत्रं
शवारूढं नीलोत्पलदलप्रभम्।
             कृपाणपाणिमस्रौघं
पिबन्तं राक्षसेश्वरम् ॥
Meditate on Nirurti, the
Lords of Rakshasas (demons) having blood-shot eyes, riding a corpse, of
dark blue complexion like the petals of a blue lily, carrying a sword in his
hands and drinking blood.
वरुणः(Varuna)
– presiding deity of the West.  He
creates rain and makes trees and plants grow and makes people happy.
               श्लोकः
               नागपाशधरं
हृष्टं रक्तौघद्युतिविग्रहम्।
               शशाङ्कधवलं ध्यायेत् वरुणं मकरासनम्॥
Meditate on Varuna riding
an alligator, carrying nagapasa ( rope of snake), joyful, having a form of
dark red and bright like the moon.
      
वायुः
(Vaayu) – the presiding deity of the North West – bestows longevity and
strength.
               श्लोकः
               आपीतं
हरितच्छायं विलोलध्वजधारिणम्।
               प्राणभूतं
च भूतानां हरिणस्थं समीरण्म् ॥
Meditate on Vayu riding a
deer, of green colour, carrying a fluttering flag and the very life of all
living beings.
कुबेरः(Kubera)
– presiding deity of North – bestows happiness and wealth
               श्लोकः
               कुबेरं
मनुजासीनं सगर्वं गर्वविग्रहम्।
               स्वर्णच्छायं
गदाहस्तं उत्तराधिपतिं स्मरेत्॥
Meditate on Kubera, the
Lord of North, riding a human, having a 
proud bearing, embodiment of pride, of golden hue and carrying a mace in
his hand.
ईशानः(Ishanah)
– presiding deity of North East – bestows spiritual knowledge leading to
liberation (moksha)
    
    
           इशानं
वृषभारूढं त्रिशूलं व्यालधारिणम्।
           शरच्चन्द्रसमाकारं
त्रिनेत्रं नीलकण्ठकम्
Meditate on Ishana (Lord
Siva), riding a bull, carrying a trisula (trident), wearing serpents, having
a bright form as the autumnal full moon, three eyes and a blue tinge on the
neck (caused by kalakuta poison)
