SRIKRISHNA KARNAMRUTAM -ASHWASA 1 (SL0KAS 76 TO 110)

                    Srikrishna Karnamrutham
Srikrishna Karnamrutham is a beautiful devotional poem authored by
Bilwamangala Swami, also known as Lila Shuka because of his descriptions of the
leelas of Krishna in the same manner
in which Suka described it to Parikshit.
Lila Suka has painted vivid word picutres of the leelas of Krishna as a child, as an adolescent boy and as a lover.
The work contains 328 verses in three aashwasas (or sargas, chapters).
Throughout the book the undercurrent is loving devotion to Krishna who is
regarded as the plenary incarnation of Mahavishnu, the purely sattwic aspect of
brahman, the Ultimate reality.  It is
said that Chaitanya mahaprabhu was acquainted with this work and he greatly
appreciated it.
Given below are slokas 76 to 110 of the first ashwasa with a prosaic
translation in English.
My
prostrations to that effulgence (Krishna) which is smeared with the kumkum
from the breasts of cowherd women and who is the very source of the music from
the flute.
(I visualize
in my mind) child Krishna,  who is my
very life, coming towards me playfully with his feet soft and pretty as leaf
buds, with the soft tinkling of anklets and sweet melodies flowing from his
flute.
,
I visualize,
coming towards me,  child Krishna, who is
the friend of those with no other friends, whose sidelong glances are charged
with bliss (joy),  drenching my eagerly
receptive ears with the flow of  playful
sweet nectar of music from his flute.
My God
(Krishna) is looking at me from a distance, his playful gait like that of an
elephant and his eyes sending out a continuous flow of sidelong glances.  When he is near, three is a continuous flow
of captivating sweet music from his lips (which play the flute).
Here comes
Lord Krishna playing sweet music on his flute and walking with his  wonderful feet which bestow happiness on all
the three worlds, which are repositories of divine leelas,  which cool the eyes of all, which are
resplendent with ornaments, which provide refuge to those who have no other
refuge.
He (Krishna) is the one who
dispels the anguish in the hearts of saints, who stole the garments of gopis
passionately in love with him and who subdued the arrogance of Indra. It
is the same Krishna who has stolen my heart-lotus (My heart is yearning for
Krishna).
When that effulgence
(Krishna), the very acme (Emperor) of omniscience and beauty, enters my eyes (meaning
when it reveals itself), it experiences the state of Nirvana or Supreme Peace.
Something called Krishna which is my very
life has a moon-like face which is as bright as the rising moon and which
doubles my ocean of thirst (for the darshan of Krishna) [ Like the moon
which causes tides in the ocean, the moon-like face of Krishna  enhances my thirst to see him before my
eyes]
My mind kisses again
and again the lotus face of Krishna which has sweet lips and beautiful
eyes  with a red tinge, blessing all
those who bow down before it (with its merciful glances).
See the great
child form of Krishna which is nectar to the eyes, whose hands give lessons in
beauty to the lotus flowers of autumn, whose feet excel in beauty the first
born tender leaves of the wish-fulfilling tree of heaven and whose eyes crush
the vanity of everything comparable to them in the three worlds.
He (Krishna)
discovers ever new ways of playing daily; he enthralls the heart of even
Arundhati by the beauty of his sweet smile; he is so handsome that it is praised
even by the love god and he rules over the empire of the breasts of gopis of
Vraja
Victory to Krishna who enthrals the whole word and
who is my very life, whose youth has just bloomed,  who is adorned by a childhood which is on the
way out,  whose eyes reflect passion,
whose nectar of a smile is very beautiful,
whose glances are fleeting and who lovingly drinks out of his flute’s
mouth (plays the flute).
The lotus-like
feet of Krishna are wonderful; his lotus-like eyes are wonderful; his lotus-like
face is wonderful; O Mother ! everything about Krishna is wonderful!.
Krishna is the ornament of the whole world; he adorns the
pot-like breasts of Lakshmi, daughter of the ocean; he is the central   emerald gem on the garlands of the young women
of Vraja; I salute him.
The effulgence
that is Krishna is smeared with the red sandal paste from the breasts of
Lakshmi when he takes hold of her locks
(to plant a kiss on her lips) and drops of perspiration play on his
mirror-like cheeks.
The
whole form of the Lord is sweet.  His
face is sweet. The soft smile of his has the scent of honey.  Every thing about Krishna is sweet, sweet,
nothing but sweet.
I take
refuge in Him who is the refuge of the whole world,  who is the very essence of erotic sentiment (sringara
rasa
),  who adorns himself with the
plumes of the peacock and who has willed to take a human form.
O Lord! even today thousands of wise men
well-versed in the Upanishads are not able to see you before their eyes or in
their hearts.  That being the case, when
will you have mercy on me and reveal yourself
before my eyes and stay there for long.
O Keshava! what
is this wonderful radiance of your moon-like face? What is this form of yours
which is impossible to describe in words?
This sweetness and beauty of your form – I prostrate before  you again and again.
The moon,
defeated by your moon-like face, divided itself into ten parts and took refuge
in the ten nails of your feet and became much more brighter.  What exuberance of  mercy! O Lord!
How is it that
your face is compared with the lotus and with many full moons?  (The lotus blooms when the sun rises and
closes when the sun sets.  The moon is
waxing and waning). Where can I find something which is the most beautiful in
the world and, at the same time, which, like your face, is bright at all times
( unlike the lotus or the moon)?
.
If you are
willing to hear, hear my words which were not ever spoken by poets of earlier
days.  What I say is “the moon certainly
deserves to be the lamp to be used in doing nirajana
(waving of lights)
to your face (which excels by far the brightness of the moon)”
Victory to your
smiles which are cool and from which flow uninterrupted peace (salvation) which
dispels all other rasas (sentiments) and which are like the sea of
nectar the high tide of which is not restricted.
Let
there be thousands of people  who want to
be pioneers in the search of Truth and who have vowed to reach the acme of
perfection in beauty. We do not argue with them or speak in favour of them.  The Truth is that beauty has really matured
and reached its acme only in you.
I worship that
cowherd (Krishna) of bewitching beauty like Cupid,  who is the full moon of Gokula,
sitting under the wish-giving tree surrounded by cows, cowherd boys and girls
and producing sweet music from his flute with his lips red like the bimba fruit
O Krishna! Your
birth in gokula had lots of impact on many things.  The simple cowherd women shed their shyness
and became passionately in love with you.
The sweet playful songs became steeped in honey.  The  words
of those like me brimmed with sweetness, poetic imagery and meaning and O Lord!
my life itself, which was drifting,  became fruitful.
The world is your home, your consort is
goddess Lakshmi, sons are Brahma and the god of Love, servants are celestials
including Indra but O Lord! your history (conduct) is really strange.
May that Krishna live long; Krishna who
sports a tilak of musk marking the good fortune of the damsels of heaven
and who is excited about  love sport with
the young belles of Vraja.
There
is no god for me except Lord Krishna.  He
is the only one who gives me love, who fulfils my desires, who understands my
feelings, who is my only wealth,  who is
my means of living and who is my life itself.
Let our
words (speech) about your majesty (greatness) overflow with sweetness.  Let our thoughts about your childhood grow
with more and more of your leelas (playfulness).

May the nectar of your life stories and exploits which are sweet to
the tongue of noble souls, your childish playful pranks directed towards Radha
and the melodious songs from the flute emanating from your lotus-mouth, pass
through my heart (mind) continuously without break.

O Lord! If, by the grace of God, we develop loving devotion to You
who has taken the form of the Divine Child (Krishna), then personified Mukti (liberation) Herself will be at
our service with folded hands. Dharma
(virtue), artha (Wealth) and kama (enjoyment, desires ) will be
waiting for their time.

Victory
to you O God of the gods of gods whose
divine names bring all that is good to the people of the three worlds.
Victory to God, child Krishna,  whose
incarnation is sweet to the ears, minds and eyes (of people of the three
worlds).

Prostrations
to you who shines in the minds of those who are adorned with playfulness
arising out of a shower of abundance of joy, who is the adornment of the
beautiful Gokula,  whose greatness
is incapable of being described in words and who is the sea of the very essence
of pure sweetness alone.

Lila Suka who
considers the lotus feet of Lord Shiva as his adornment and

who desired to sing praises of the fame of Krishna and
his exploits
